The state of carbon payments and the voluntary carbon market in agriculture

About the event

Despite increasing interest in and the pressing need for agricultural sector innovation and transformation, challenges persist in scaling low-emission solutions for resilient agriculture due to limited incentives and investments for farmers. The untapped potential of agriculture in Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCM) is significant, offering numerous socio-economic benefits. Carbon payments can drive transformative change, especially for smallholders, with rising demand due to compliance policies and corporate sustainability goals. This side event will present the first global stocktake of carbon payments and the VCM in agriculture. Distinguished panelists will share their diverse experiences and strategies, fostering dialogue on financing large-scale transformative solutions at the national level. Existing institutional and technical challenges associated with the development of these markets will be discussed and some solutions explored.
